The mAT-180H provides automatic antenna tuning across the entire HF spectrum plus 6 meters, at power levels up to 120 watts. It will tune dipoles, verticals, Yagis, or virtually any coax-fed antenna. It will match an amazing range of antennas and impedances, far greater than some other tuners you may have considered, including the built-in tuners on many radios.
The mAT-180H is an automatic antenna tuner specially designed for modern ICOM and KENWOOD HF transceivers. It has two adapter cables to choose from: mAT-CI and mAT-CK. They are suitable for ICOM and KENWOOD transceivers respectively. With matching adapter cables, tuners can be used for corresponding transceivers. mAT-180H standard accessories only contain ICOM adapter cable mAT-CI, if you need mAT-CK, please buy more.
The mAT-180H has 16,000 frequency memories. When tuning on or near a previously tuned frequency, the mAT-180H uses "Memory Tune" to recall the previous tuning parameters in a fraction of a second. If no memorized settings are available, the tuner runs a full tuning cycle, storing the parameters for memory recall on subsequent tuning cycles on that frequency. In this manner, the mAT-180H "learns" as it is used, adapting to the bands and frequencies as it goes.
Compatible Transceivers
ICOM Transceivers
When mAT-180H is used with ICOM transceiver through mAT-CI adapter cable, it is fully compatible with the original AH-3 and AH-4 automatic tuners of ICOM. Transceivers that can use both ICOM tuners can also use mAT-180H, which includes:
- IC-706, 703, 718
- IC-7000, 7100, 7200
- IC-7300, 7410
- IC-746, 756, 7600 series transceivers
- Other modern transmitters from ICOM Company.
Note: This tuner cannot be used with IC-705 transmitter. If you use this transmitter, please select mAT-705 tuner.
KENWOOD Transceivers
When the tuner is used with KENWOOD transceiver through mAT-CK adapter cable, it is fully compatible with KENWOOD original tuners, such as AT-250, AT-300. KENWOOD transceivers that can use mAT-180H include:
- TRC-80, TK-80
- TS-2000, 50, 450
- TS-480SAT (excluding HX version)
- TS-570, 590, 850, 870, 990
- Other modern transmitters from KENWOOD Company.
Other types of transceivers can use mAT-180H as long as they support KENWOOD AT-300 tuners. KENWOOD TS-430, TS-440 are too old to use this tuner.
Important Note
For some transceivers with built-in tuners, such as KENWOOD TS-480, TS-2000 and TS-590(S/SG), the external tuner must be connected to the ANT1. These transceivers will not initiate an external tuning cycle if ANT 2 is selected. Because their built-in tuners have been fixed to ANT2 and cannot be changed. When you don't know how a transceiver connects to an external tuner, please read the transceiver's operation manual carefully.
Front Panel
Front Panel Components:
- 1.5, 2.0, 3.0 Indicators - Show current SWR and status of tuner
- PWR Indicator - Power light
- SAVE Button - Save the configuration data of LC to memory
- CUP, CDN Buttons - Increase and decrease the current capacitance of the LC circuit of the tuner
- LUP, LDN Buttons - Increase and decrease the current inductance of the LC circuit of the tuner
- TUNE Button - Manually start the tuner cycle
There are four fine-tuning buttons on the front panel of the mAT-180H, and sometimes you can get a lower SWR with them. It also has a "TUNE" button on the front panel, which can also start tuning.
Rear Panel
Rear Panel Connectors:
- WIRE Terminal - Connecting wire antenna (red terminal)
- GND Terminal - Connected to antenna system ground (black terminal)
- ANTENNA Socket - SO-239 socket, connect antenna with 50 ohm coaxial cable
- RF IN Socket - SO-239 socket, connected to the transmitter's "ANT" socket, using 50 ohm coaxial cable
- RADIO Socket - This socket is connected to the transmitter's "tuner" socket via a 4-pin adapter cable mAT-CI. This cable comes with the tuner.
Important Connection Note
"ANTENNA" and "WIRE" cannot be connected to antenna at the same time! Choose one connection method based on your antenna type.
To facilitate the use of wire antennas, in addition to having two SO-239 standard RF sockets, the rear panel of the mAT-180H has two terminals, one red and one black. Red terminal connecting wire antenna, black terminal connecting ground wire. The mAT-180H connects to the transceiver via its tuner jack to control the tuning cycle, the transceivers tune button controls the tuner. The tuner jack also powers the tuner, so it requires no external power supply.
Adapter Cables
Standard Adapter Cable:
This is the mAT-CI adapter cable, which is used to connect the mAT-180H to the ICOM transceiver, transmit control commands and power supply. It is the standard accessory of the tuner and is provided with the tuner.
Optional Adapter Cable:
This is the mAT-CK adapter cable, which is used to connect the mAT-180H to the KENWOOD transceiver, transmit control commands and power supply. It's not a standard accessory to tuners, it's an optional device.
Supplementary Notes
For some ICOM transceivers, such as IC-M710, F7000, their tuner sockets are not standard 4-pin sockets. After retrofitting their "TUNER" sockets, mAT-180H can still be used, just to ensure that each line in the socket is connected correctly. For the definition of each line in their sockets, please read the operation manual of the transceiver. The same is true for KENWOOD transceivers.
